Aromatherapy sprays have a multitude of uses in and outside the home and are really easy to make. As essential oils are antiviral and antibacterial in properties they make a great air freshener, bacteria buster, antiseptic spray or insect repellent; and because they smell so great they also can be used as a light body spray, clothes and hair freshener too! With varying properties to alter emotional, mental and physical states essential oil based aromatherapy sprays can also be used to change the way you feel - enabling you to relax and unwind or energise and invigorate. Whatever you wish to use an aromatherapy spray for, they are safe, gentle and non-toxic making it a perfect environmentally friendly alternative for many daily needs.

To make your own aromatherapy spray buy a 2.75 ounce coloured glass bottle with a spray top - the reason a glass bottle is required is because the oils can degrade in sunlight. Use 15 drops of your chosen essential oils (whichever scents or blends you prefer - feel free to experiment!), mix this with 8 teaspoons of distilled spring water and one teaspoon of vodka or witch hazel to help the mix blend. Shake the mixture gently and then use as appropriate.

At this strength the aromatherapy spray makes an ideal bacteria buster or for use as a body and hair freshener; if you have especially sensitive skin reduce the amount of oils used to under eight drops and it'll be suitable for most skins types. Stored in a cool dark place this aromatherapy spray will last up to three months.

For a soothing, relaxing aromatherapy spray use chamomile, lavender, geranium and clary sage to ground you when you're feeling stressed or overrun - this mix is great for easing headaches and for refreshing bed linen to encourage a great night's sleep.

For a refreshing pick me up use spearmint, peppermint, patchouli, lime or other citrus oils to use when you're feeling tired, overheated or flushed - this invigorating aromatherapy spray is especially great in the summertime and works a wonder when used on smelly feet!

For a romantic, sensual blend try using ylang ylang, lavender, vanilla and geranium to help create an indulgent atmosphere perfect with a few candles and a loved one.

If you're looking for a little inspiration then mix patchouli, ginger and citrus oils such as sweet orange or pink grapefruit to brighten your mood and personal space - this is an especially good blend for use as a memory booster so spray liberally around learning spaces!

So go on, experiment and have fun making your own aromatherapy sprays!
